Food security in urban areas

Urban farming has promoted food security at the household level, improved nutrition, and enhanced resilience to climate change impacts. By utilizing innovative farming techniques and leveraging technology, urban farming in Kenya supplies fresh produce to local markets and restaurants. Multi-storey gardening is a farming technology that aims at producing more vegetables and fruits, to meet the rising food need in Kenya while utilizing space in urban areas. It promotes the efficient use of land and water by growing plants vertically, instead of using the conventional horizontal ground farming methods. The suitable vegetables to grow are Coriander, kale, capsicum, eggplants, spinach, tomatoes, okra, and amaranths. It is a cost-effective farming technology as it discourages pests, and weeds and conserves water through minimal evaporation.
